Chermside hospital is renamed

December 31, 2008 by admin

The name “Holy Spirit Northside Private Emergency Centre’’ has been changed.
The facility, located on Rode Rd, was renamed the Brisbane Northside Emergency Centre on December 5.

Medical director Phillip Kay said the private emergency centre was the first in Australia to open its doors simultaneously in 2001 with a private hospital.

Seven years on, the centre has extended its services across Brisbane city.

“We chose to share our name with Holy Spirit Northside Hospital when we opened to avoid customer confusion,” Dr Kay said.

“But now another name change is in order to reflect our expanded services,” he said.

The centre will continue to support emergency medical specialists and the only change is the name.

“Customers probably won’t even notice the name change because we will still continue to offer private emergency care in a professional and caring manner.”

Brisbane Northside Emergency offers broad spectrum services across all specialties, including children but not multi trauma.

Retailers report healthy Boxing Day sales

Despite fears that the economic downturn would hurt sales, retailers have reported a busy day’s trade across Australia in Boxing Day sales.

Thousands of Australians dragged themselves out of bed before the crack of dawn today to take advantage of the sales, with some stores opening at 5:00am (AEDT).

There were fears this would be a quiet time for retailers as the economic crisis takes hold.

But thanks to lower petrol prices, falling interest rates and the Federal Government’s cash bonus, shoppers are expected to fork out $5.5 billion between now and the end of the year.

Australian Retailers Association spokeswoman Margy Osmond said those factors have provided customers with some special bargains.

“I think this has probably been one of the best value Christmas shoppers have ever seen,” she said.

But she warned the bargains will not last for long, with a weak Australian dollar making many foreign made goods more expensive to import, and retailers say those increased costs will soon be passed on.

“Many of these big ticket items, like homewares, furnishing … big ticket items are going to become more expensive,” she said.

Customers raided Brisbane’s biggest shopping centre at Chermside, north of Brisbane, to indulge in the post-Christmas specials, but the city’s Queen Street Mall reported a slower start.

While crowds were gathered outside major retailers – Myer and David Jones – for the start of trade this morning, there was none of the mayhem seen in previous years.

Scott Driscoll from the Retailers Association of Queensland says while there has been no evidence of the recent talk of an economic downturn, members have reported good trading for the Boxing Day sales.

In Sydney and Melbourne, the big department stores are open until midnight tonight.

AN equipment shed at Marchant Park, Chermside, has been named in honour of Clem Jones to recognise his contributions to the Warehouse Cricket Association over more than 30 years.

Warehouse Cricket held a naming ceremony for the new Marchant Park equipment building, now known as the Clem Jones Shed, on Saturday.
Speakers included Brisbane City councillor Fiona King (Marchant ward), Warehouse Cricket president John Forrest, as well as representatives from the Clem Jones Group and trustees of the Clem Jones Estate.
Jones was the patron of the Warehouse Cricket Association from 1975-2007. Throughout that period, he maintained an active involvement in the activities of the association.
The equipment shed was built to replace an old wooden building which served as the base for the Warehouse Cricket curators for many decades.
The previous equipment compound was destroyed in an arson attack on April 24, 2006.
The construction of the new facility was made possible through a donation of $100,000 from Jones, combined with a Brisbane City Council Community Benefit Grant of $50,000, the insurance compensation and Warehouse Cricket Association funds.

NOW that the sprinkler on the back lawn is off the agenda in Queensland’s more water-conscious areas you may have to take the children somewhere else to beat the muggy summer heat.

Local council swimming pools are always a good bet, but in recent years the emergence of large, often free public cooling-off facilities has attracted many people. They are designed to be great fun, they are patrolled and often offer features far superior to anything at home

On your Christmas holidays, check out Chermside Pool. It is a large centre for swimming lessons and hydrotherapy and the 25m pool is open all year. The water fun park has a separate entry and an impressive water slide.

Westfield Chermside to charge for parking after three hours

December 26, 2008 by admin

WESTFIELD Chermside shopping centre has announced that from the middle of next year it will allow three hours of free parking before charging customers.

Retailer reaction to the paid parking has been mixed, with some store owners yesterday unsure how the plan would affect business.

The Retailers Association has predicted a customer backlash. Executive director Scott Driscoll says previous attempts to get Brisbane shoppers to pay for parking in suburban centres had failed.

Some retailers, however, believe the plan will free up customer parking.

“It happened in Sydney and it wasn’t a problem there,” one store owner said.

In a letter to retailers last week, centre manager Lachlan Dyson confirmed the parking plan and said there would be an extended free period for disabled customers and cinema patrons.

Chermside is the only one of the five shopping centres operated by Westfield in greater Brisbane to be affected.
